Senzeni takes Thobela away to join The Struggle in 1976, when Thobela is fourteen: his uncle enters the family home at night and carries him from the life his father, Lawrence Mpayipheli, had hoped to give him. The episode is both a literal separation and the beginning of a formative journey. Lawrence recalls that Senzeni had Thobela initiated and took him to places where Xhosa blood had been shed; when they returned three months later, father and son no longer recognized one another. The rupture would deepen when Thobela left for war in 1979, but the novel’s later movements toward honour, care, and homecoming keep the departure from being the final word on his life.
